Drone capturing progress on a construction site

How to Hire a Construction Drone Provider

A practical guide to choosing the right drone partner for progress monitoring, earthworks, BIM comparison and inspections.

Hiring a drone provider for a construction or infrastructure project is different from booking a photographer. The right partner flies your site safely on a reliable schedule, hits the accuracy your team needs, and delivers data in the formats your project software already uses.

1. Define the job and the schedule

Decide what you need — progress capture, cut/fill volumes, BIM comparison, as-builts or inspections — and how often: one-off, weekly, fortnightly or monthly for the life of the project.

2. Set the accuracy you need

Visual progress photos need no survey control. Volumes, grade checks and design comparison usually need RTK/PPK and ground control points, with stated horizontal and vertical accuracy.

3. Check deliverables and software fit

Confirm the provider can deliver orthomosaics, surfaces, point clouds, design overlays or reports in the formats and platforms your team uses (CAD, BIM, project-management or drone-data platforms).

4. Verify licences, insurance and site safety

Ask for the pilot licence or certification required in your country, liability insurance, site induction and safety documentation, and how they handle airspace near airports and cranes.

5. Compare quotes on the same scope

Send every provider the same site size, frequency, accuracy and deliverables so quotes are comparable. Ask about turnaround time and what happens if weather delays a scheduled flight.

Questions to Ask Every Provider

  • • Which construction projects similar to ours have you flown, and can we see sample deliverables?
  • • What accuracy do you achieve, and do you use RTK/PPK and ground control points?
  • • Can you deliver data into our BIM, CAD or project platform?
  • • How quickly after each flight will we receive the data?
  • • What licences, insurance and site safety documents can you provide?
  • • How do you handle recurring schedules, weather delays and access to the site?

Red Flags to Watch For

  • • No portfolio or sample deliverables available
  • • Cannot specify the accuracy of their outputs
  • • No professional processing software mentioned
  • • Quoting significantly below market rates
  • • No insurance documentation available
  • • No site safety documentation or experience on active job sites
