Compliant Drone Fleets for Public and Federally Funded Projects

What to check when a contract restricts which drones can be used.

Why it matters

Some public and federally funded contracts restrict the drone makes and models that contractors and subcontractors may use. In the US, the American Security Drone Act and related federal acquisition rules affect federally funded work; other countries and agencies may have their own requirements.

What to ask providers

Ask for the make, model and serial numbers of the aircraft they will use and whether they appear on the lists your contract references (for example the DIU Blue UAS list or AUVSI Green UAS in the US). Rules and lists change, so check against the current version at the time of contracting.

Plan early

If you are not sure whether your project is affected, check with your contracting officer or legal adviser before procurement. Flag the requirement in your quote request so only suitable providers respond.
